Justice Department Announces ADA Title II Consent Decree With Humboldt County, California
The Justice Department announced today that it filed a complaint and consent decree resolving claims that the county violated Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) after failing to comply with the ADA under a Project Civic Access (PCA) Settlement Agreement. Under the consent decree, the county will, among other things, bring all county facilities, programs, services and activities into compliance with the ADA within three and a half years; ensure that the county website conforms with the Website Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0AA; provide curb ramps at all county intersections; ensure that emergency management procedures, policies, and shelters are accessible to individuals with disabilities; hire an ADA coordinator, independent licensed architect, web accessibility coordinator and website accessibility consultant; and pay $275,000 to compensate individuals with disabilities who faced barriers to facilities, programs, services or activities. The agreement has a term of three and a half years.

For those who are planning to take the Certified Access Specialist (CASp) examination in October, the last day to register is September 12, 2016. You can register for this exam through your CASp Account Login.
Details on the October 12, 2016 CASp examination is as follows:
• OPEN BOOK — Check in begins at 7:30 a.m.
◦ Project Type: Title II Seaside Recreation Area and Community Recreation Center
◦ A 15-minute period will be provided for reviewing the plan set prior to the start of the open book exam.
• CLOSED BOOK — Check in begins at 12:30 p.m.
• LOCATIONS — Sacramento and Los Angeles (Hawthorne)

DSA Announces the Project Type for the October 2016 Open Book CASp Exam
The project type for the Open Book portion of the Certified Access Specialist (CASp) examination on October 12, 2016, is a Title II Seaside Recreation Area and Community Recreation Center. As previously announced, starting with the October 2016 exam, the CASp exam will include test questions related to the provisions of the recently published 2016 California Building Standards Code. An updated List of Reference Materials is available.
Details on the next CASp examination are as follows:
October 12, 2016 — Sacramento and Los Angeles (Hawthorne)
• Open Book — Check in begins at 7:30 a.m.
• Closed Book — Check in begins at 12:30 p.m.

Unfortunately, there are many people with disabilities in the criminal justice system. Back in 1998, the Supreme Court made clear in a case called Yeskey that the ADA applies to state prisons. This webinar will review how the ADA has been applied to law enforcement and the criminal justice system, including a discussion of recent litigation involving the segregation of people with mental illness in prisons.
